It was built, according to the inscription above the entrance, in the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent in 1566 in honor of Anatolian and rumelian of beglerbeg Ahmed Pasha. Erected by the prominent architect Sinan of red porphyry in the XVII century, the mosque is an architectural marvel and is considered the oldest mosque in Ankara. The most attractive part of the mosque is the prayer niche, made of white marble. It is rectangular in shape and occupies an area of 14 × 14 meters.

The mosque has three domes, covered with tiles and a balcony, as well as one tall minaret towering right of the entrance. Front built three large arches.

The inner room is illuminated by thirty-two small window, placed in three rows. From the ceiling hang large crystal chandeliers. In the North-Western corner of the mosque there are several marble columns.

Restoration work at the mosque was carried out twice - in 1813 and 1940.
