Hadrian's Gate Photo: Hadrian's Gate

Antalya was founded by the king of Pergamon Attalos. After he died last the king of Pergamon, the city came to Rome. Antalya became a prosperous port and was safely surrounded by walls built of stone. In the walls there were several gates, which was tightly closed and sealed during the attack invaders or pirates.

To this day preserved only gate - the gate of Hadrian. For a long time, gates defended the city wall and they hardly ever used, probably, so the structure remained to our time. They have the appearance of a monumental triple-arched portal, very reminiscent of a Roman triumphal arch. It is because of the three arches of the gate is also called Uch Kapilar – "three gates". The construction of the gate was held in 130 ad before Analia was visited by Emperor Hadrian.

Front and rear gates decorated with marble columns with beautiful capitals, the arches have a coffered ceiling. Originally the gate was two-storey. It is likely that at the top of the columns once adorned the statue of the Emperor Hadrian and his family members, but up to now they have not been preserved.

A stone pavement under the Central arch riddled with deep furrows left by the wheels of the huge number of passing here for many millennia carts. So you can pass better through gate right or left arch, not to accidentally tuck the ankle.

On both sides of the gate there are massive crenellated towers, built of stone. On the left is the South tower (Tower of St. Julia) was built in the Roman period, as evidenced by covering the gate thread. The Northern tower was built during the reign of Seljuk Turks at the direction of Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat First (1219-1938 gg.). The proof of this is the plaque that is mounted in the North tower. The inscription on the Board is made in the Turkish language with the use of the Arabic alphabet.

Currently Hadrian's gate has not lost its purpose, they are in Old Antalya. A little East of the gate is a cozy, shady Park that's a favorite with locals. All around the gate waiters serving delicious Turkish tea.
