Wadi Rum Photo: Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is a unique corner of the planet, “moon landscape” of oddly-shaped by wind and sand rocks, located on a desert plateau, lunar landscape of pink Sands and the black mountains, the Kingdom of the Bedouins, peace, echo and the singing of the wind, which became the backdrop for the real story which was told by the Director D. Lin in the film “Lawrence of Arabia”. Wadi Rum is the largest and one of the most spectacular desert landscapes not only Jordan, but also in the world. Powerful rock wall towering above the arid plain red. Some peaks reach a height of 1750 meters, climbing on them can be performed only by those who have serious mountaineering training. But no less exciting paths can be carried out by the gloomy gorges and bright hills, built from local colored Sandstone and burning in the rays of the local hot sun like jewels. Others prefer to spend the day at a leisurely walk on the camel's back, and the night under the huge South the stars in a Bedouin tent. By the way, relatively few modern Bedouin in Jordan continue to live the life of their ancestors. The majority of them move to cities and confidently included in the cycle of civilization. Nevertheless, the colorful Bedouin tent with grazing around camels and sheep, are still found in Wadi Rum (and in Jordan in General) everywhere.

Despite the advent of civilization, the tourist of today can count on a traditional Bedouin hospitality, and at least a fragrant Cup of Bedouin coffee.

Best to come here in the spring, when after the rains the desert for a short period fabulously green, turning into a kind of endless lush meadows, and for a few months “comes to life” flowers and birds. Red anemones, poppies and the famous black iris, the flower that became the national emblem of Jordan, caught the traveller at every step.

The main attraction of Wadi Rum is the desert itself. Wadi Rum - the classic example for the sandy desert landscape with its built of multicolored Sandstone rocks and mountains (Arabic name title: “Jabal”), soaring up almost perfectly smooth surface reddish-pink. A continuation of the desert can be considered the ruins of the ancient Nabatean temple, a stunning specimen of the dominant many centuries ago architectural style. On the reserve organized a network of specially protected sites for compact residence of an endangered species of desert fauna.

Wadi Rum is the most convenient to visit in one big tour with races in Dana, Petra and Aqaba. Wadi Rum is 3, 5-4 hours away by bus from Amman to the South on a major highway to Aqaba. From Aqaba to Wadi rum. less than an hour North. From Aqaba and Wadi Musa (near Petra) ply mini van to Wadi rum.
