Astrakhan has a long circus tradition. Since the beginning of the XIX century in the summer in the city passed the Volga annual fair, at which he worked several circus booths. And since 1885, the residents of Astrakhan had the opportunity to visit a real circus tent in the form of a wooden building with a canvas dome, built by Italian entrepreneur A. Besana. Circus troupe then consisted of his children and talented students. In the building of the circus Besano made tours even V. L. Durov as clown trainer.

In 1898 circus troupe "Nikitin Brothers" included in Astrakhan circular tour of the ring – Caucasus after the troupe went to Astrakhan, and then went on tour on cities of the Volga region. The brothers built a wooden building of the circus in the garden "Otradnoe", which differed not only a beautiful interior decoration, but also could accommodate 1200 spectators. Circus troupe set programs-divertissements (a series of several entertainment plays a merry dance and popular theatre productions, pantomimes: "Julius Caesar", "the Chinese feast" and others.

In subsequent years, the circuses in Astrakhan was built, burned, destroyed and re-built. Most often worked in the city as a travelling circus tent that could operate only in the summer. In 1960 the last century in Astrakhan built a summer stationary circus with canvas cover, two years fabric dome was replaced by a metal with a rigid skeleton, expanded spectator stands up to 1200 people, gave it a modern appearance.

To the 450th anniversary of Astrakhan in the training program the city has paid special attention to the building of the circus. Reconstruction lasted almost two and a half years, and in 2010 Astrakhan circus was invited to the opening of the visitors and residents. The circus building was a two-storey, extended foyer, built the three-story administration building, built outbuilding with living quarters for animals, have developed a modern system of heating and conditioning, increased the number of dressing rooms and shower rooms. The circus had the opportunity to give performances all year round.

Today the management of the circus working to educate a new generation of artists-Astrakhantsev and hoped that in a short time in Astrakhan will have its own circus troupe.
