Astrakhan is famous by the fact that this city was the third in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg, where the Tsar Peter the great opened the state chemist, who was then the centre of the workpiece drugs and drug production. This event is part of the distant 1721.
In the early 90-ies of the last century on the initiative of doctors of regional clinical hospital №1 (now – Alexandro-Mariinsky hospital in a separate building in the medical complex was opened Museum of the history of medicine. The Museum presents research on the development of medicine in the South of Russia from the period of opening of the first medical institutions (end of XVIII century to our time. The Museum is housed in one-storey stone building built in the classical style by architects K. K. Domontovich and S. I. karyagina in 1912.
In the Museum there are unique exhibits of the archaeological collection of objects of care which refer to the III century BC. A large collection complement detailed recreations of the interiors of an office of the doctor and the Apothecary, rare ancient books on medicine, medical instruments and other original exhibits of the late XIX – early XX century. Visitors will find here the answers to the questions: how the fight against epidemics in the region, how and what was treated in antiquity, where and how prepared the medical workforce, where can I get a medical education today, as developing medicine Astrakhan and many others. A separate section is devoted to the dynasties of doctors Astrakhantsev, doctors who died in the struggle with dangerous infections, the events associated with cholera epidemics in the Volga region. In the Museum there is an exhibition hall with exhibits, commemorative events in the industry of medicine.
To the 450th anniversary of Astrakhan in the Museum of the history of medicine launched an updated and expanded exposition.
