Museum of Astrakhan culture is located in a historic building, built in the late XVIII century. The Museum was opened in 1978, the year of the 150th anniversary of N. G. Chernyshevsky. It is noteworthy that initially the Museum functioned as a literary.
The Museum building was rebuilt many times, but has not lost its appeal and is reminiscent of a typical residential house in South city – with a wooden veranda, a quiet courtyard. The year 2000 was a landmark for the Museum in connection with the completion and expansion of exhibits materials relating to the cultural life of Astrakhan, the Museum received a new status – the Museum of Astrakhan culture.
The Museum contains materials relating to literary, musical and theatrical heritage of the region, starting from the XVIII to XX century. In addition, here you can learn about the activities of prominent figures of Russia, whose names are somehow related to Astrakhan. For example, in this city, was born and raised the first Russian academician V. K. Trediakovsky, fabulist I. I. Chemnitzer. In addition, at various times in Astrakhan lived and worked F. Shalyapin, N. Papayan, V. Barsova, M. Maksakova. In the Museum you can see household items, furniture, documents and photographs, paintings, theatrical sketches and layouts of the nineteenth century.
The Museum regularly holds meetings and organizes art exhibitions. On the basis of the Museum for over ten years and operates literary Studio of the Union of Russian writers.
