Byzantine Museum Photo: Byzantine Museum

The Museum is housed in an elegant mansion in the Florentine style, built in the mid-nineteenth century. In 30-ies of XX century on the initiative of the collector Georgis Sotiriou and with the assistance of the architect Aristotelis of Tahosa the mansion was turned into a Museum. The entrance was decorated in the form of a cloister, which contains a copy of the fountain of the monastery of Daphne with mosaic panels.

The Museum covers more than 1500-year period and is in chronological order. On the ground floor presents various options of decor and architectural details of the early Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, as well as a collection of icons and sculptures. On the second floor presents a variety of objects connected with Church ceremonies, including a unique pattern of gold embroidery XIV century from Thessaloniki depicting scenes of the lamentation of Christ. There are also frescoes and a collection of icons of the Greek Diaspora.
