The Palace of Queen Maria and the Botanical garden Photo: the Palace of Queen Maria and the Botanical garden

A mile from the town of Balchik, near the sea, between three hills stands the Palace, which bears the poetic name of "the Quiet nest" – a favorite vacation spot of Romania's Queen Maria. Built by Italian architects Americo and Augustine, the building has three floors and is a successful example of the combination of Oriental and European architectural elements (perhaps the reason for this lies in the fact that Mary spent her childhood in Egypt and has always advocated the convergence of Christianity and Islam). In a small chapel nearby, there is a carved image of the Queen with his daughter. In 1938, in mount Sinai Maria died while trying to prevent a duel between his sons. According to the will, her heart is immured in the walls of the chapel.

In the Palace complex of organic Botanical garden. Here visitors can see more than three thousand plants from different parts of the world. The path in the garden is paved with white stone, which during the reign of Mary was laid carpets. Very curious is a local collection of cacti as it presents nearly two hundred of the plants (it has the second largest collection of cacti in Europe). Currently the Botanical garden is administered by the Academy of Sciences of Bulgaria and it regularly hosts various events and exhibitions.
