The Cathedral of the Intercession of the blessed virgin Mary in Baranavichy – the unique temple with an unusual destiny. The Cathedral was built specifically for transported from the Warsaw Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky mosaic murals designed by architect Alexander Obolonsky.
From the late eighteenth to early twentieth century Warsaw was part of the Russian Empire. A city with a long Catholic history repeatedly rebelled against the Russian authorities and the Orthodox Church. In order to consolidate Russian domination, in 1900 in the centre of Warsaw was built huge majestic Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which the Russian Empire and the Orthodox Church have not regretted neither the means nor the energy. The interiors of the Cathedral were decorated with columns of semiprecious materials and other precious items, and a mosaic mural on sketches by V. Vasnetsov, N. Bruni, N. Kosheleva, V. Dumitrashko were made in the famous St. Petersburg workshop Frolov.
According to the decision of the Polish Sejm in 1924 Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was demolished, but seven mosaic panels were saved and moved to Baranovichi. There immediately began the erection of the Cathedral of intercession in which the newly installed panels, which for the time of transportation received minor injuries. These mosaics are recognized as the best in the world mosaics created in the XIX-XX centuries.
Now the beautiful Cathedral of Baranavichy is in perfect condition. To the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Russia it has been adorned with gilded crosses. The temple grounds are landscaped and pleasing to the eye. Since 1990 at the Cathedral Sunday school for children and adults.
