The Church of St. Nicholas, located in Birobidzhan on the street Sholem Aleichem is one of the iconic sights of this city. All the temples erected in the Middle Amur region, while the godless persecution suffered complete or partial destruction. About 70 years, the area looked a spiritual desert, and only in 1999 the Governor of the Jewish Autonomous region N. Wolves managed to unite local residents and their labors to build the first temple in the area. It was a small wooden Church, consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas.
Blessing for the erection of the Church was received in February 1997, the Project has developed a Church of LLC "Management of design works", and its construction involved OJSC "Birobidzhanstroy". In June 1999, was founded and officially registered with the parish community.
Wooden Church with a bell tower was consecrated by the Bishop of Khabarovsk and Amur mark in December 1999, the day of the patronal feast. Prior to the completion of the construction of the Annunciation Cathedral in Birobidzhan in September 2005, the Church received the status of Cathedral Birobidzhan diocese.
Nicholas Church in recent years has changed a lot thanks to the community. So, the Church is functioning diocesan hospital, operates a soup kitchen, Sunday school. In addition, in the walls of the temple are many fun activities that are educational in nature.
December 18, 2014, on the eve of day of memory of Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Birobidzhan and Koldobsky Joseph held in the Annunciation Cathedral Vespers with litiya and akathist to the Saint, and on December 19, celebrated the divine Liturgy and moleben in the Church of St. Nicholas.
