Church of the Immaculate Conception of the blessed virgin Mary in the town of Baclayon 6 km from Tagbilaran is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. In addition, it is one of the best preserved churches built by the Jesuits, although in the 19th century, its facade was slightly modernized.
First Spanish missionaries arrived from Cebu appeared in Baclayon in 1595, and soon afterwards was built the first chapel. However, after several years fear of attack by Moro pirates forced the Jesuits to move their mission inland, in the Pubic area. Only in 1717 in Baglione was founded the parish, and began construction of the Church. For construction were used corals collected on the sea shore, and fastened them with egg white. The present building of the Church was completed in 1727, and in 1835 it was attached the bell tower. Remained inside the prison, which was used to punish local residents, violating the precepts of the Roman Catholic Church.
Near the Church is an ancient building of the monastery, which is also a small Museum with old artifacts related to religion. Some exhibits about 500 years! Among the interesting Museum of gizmos one can note the statue of the crucified Christ made of ivory, the statue of the virgin Mary that, according to rumors, the parish gave herself Queen Catherine of Aragon, vintage gold monk's robes with embroidery, books with covers made of leather water Buffalo, etc.
The Church has two facades: the interior is executed in classical style, and the external, reconstructed in the 19th century, has a portico with three arches. Gilded altars are the main attraction of the interior – they represent an excellent example of the luxurious Baroque style, popular in the 18th century. Inside you can also see the authority established in the 1800's, but today are in working condition.
