Domus Municipalis is located in the northeastern part of the municipality of bragança. The building was built in the Romanesque style and is the only surviving example of civil architecture of the Gothic style in Portugal. In Braganca two prominent historical monument, Domus Municipalis is one of them.
Domus Municipalis, the oldest municipality in Portugal, located near the Church of Santa Maria. The building has an unusual shape and is a continuation of the prison tower, which is near and most likely was built in the first half of the thirteenth century. Domus Municipalis stands on the Foundation in the form of non-standard Pentagon. This form of building is considered unique in Europe. In 1503 the hall of the Domus was divided into two parts, and the building began to be used as the municipal Council, although before this time, as evidenced by the documentary sources, the building was conducted such meetings.
The first part of the Domus (below) was a primitive tank, where it was stored spring water. Above the reservoir, the so-called second part of the Domus, served as a hall, where the assembled members of the city Council and meetings were held by the civil court in respect of disputes between merchants and landowners.
Its name is Domus Municipalis - the building received in the nineteenth century. Despite the fact that in 1910 the Portuguese Institute of architectural heritage brought Domus Municipalis in the list of monuments of national importance, by 1912 the building was practically destroyed, there was no roof and was used by homeless for the night. The first restoration of the building was completed in 1936, and re-conducted in 1959.
