The Museum "Jews of Brest" was opened on March 25, 2011 in Brest, on the initiative of the Jewish public organization "the bear". The exhibits for the Museum began collecting in 2009. The main exposition of the Museum tells about the life of the Jewish community in Brest in the twentieth century, beginning in 1920.
In the XVI century, Brest was called the Jewish capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the 1860-ies in Brest-Litovsk, there were only 8829 inhabitants, of which Jews were 7510. On the eve of 1941 in Brest from 51 thousand people, more than half were Jews.
During the great Patriotic war in Brest was organized by the infamous Brest ghetto, almost all of the Jews who were exterminated in the Holocaust. The Museum exposition is devoted to the Holocaust, tells of the tragic pages of the history of the Brest ghetto.
At the time of opening of the Museum contains four sections - a total of 120 exhibits. This is an interesting historical documents, photographs, antique prayer books and books, fragments of the Torah, everyday objects, and vessels for incense, pieces of decor for antique Torah.
A separate section is devoted to the famous Jews, natives of Brest. The materials helped to collect not only the Brest Jewish community and foreign Jewish communities.
Young Museum plans to hold in the walls of exhibitions, competitions, excursions and other fun activities, and continues to raise interesting Museum exhibits related to the life of the Brest Jews. The Museum plans to conduct extensive outreach work among young people.
