Castle Lockenhaus – a medieval castle located in the South-Eastern part of Lakehouse in Burgenland. The castle is located in a hilly area in the Eastern part of Austria, near the Hungarian border, W kilometers South of Vienna. At the foot of the castle is a picturesque lake.

The castle was built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles around the year 1200, originally wore the Hungarian name "Lek". Lockenhaus was built to protect the Roman province of Pannonia from the raids of the Mongols. The castle at different times was owned by famous people such as: Henry II, king of Bohemia Ottokar II and Emperor Maximilian II. V year Lockenhaus was destroyed by Charles I.

Gradually, the castle was restored and came into the possession of Francis II, who married Elizabeth Bathory, which went down in history as "bloody Countess", known for its terror and torture. Her arms are killing more than a hundred women.

The town and castle began to actively flourish during the reign of Francis III (1622-1671), who was Lord-Lieutenant and was a member of the Royal Council. He married Julia Anne Esterhazy, daughter of Nikolaus Esterhazy.

During the Turkish war in 1683 the castle was damaged, it was looted and partially destroyed.

During the First world war and in subsequent years the castle remained intact. Reconstruction began after the Second world war, in 1968, when Professor Paul Anton Keller and his wife Margaret bought the castle in ruins. The repair was estimated at 800 thousand euros. The family sold all their possessions, investing in castle 500 thousand euros. A few years before the completion of a major reconstruction Professor Keller died. However, his wife continued to work, completing the task and renaming castle Foundation Professor Keller - Lock Lockenhaus" in honor of her husband.

From the old times remained solemn Knights ' hall, a chapel, an underground crypt. The walls are decorated with frescoes of the 13th century. According to unconfirmed reports, in the castle there were the Templars.
