One of the attractions of Burgos, the ancient capital of Castile, is the Palace of the constables of the Casa del cordón. It is located not very far from the bridge of Santa Maria, and remarkable not only for its architecture but also historical events.
The Palace was built in the 15th century in the Gothic style by John of Cologne and his son Simon. The building was quite large, with a Central patio, two Gothic arches resembled the arches in the monastic cloisters. On the South side is the main entrance, on the East side of the facade - the front gardens. Serene majestic beauty of the building blends harmoniously into the architecture of the city.
The building is decorated with numerous images of the heraldic shields of the owner of the Palace, made of stone. Above the front door, two such shields are connected by a rope, carved into the stone, like a belt Franciscan monk, apparently, because this part of the Palace called the House of the Rope. The door of the house is also decorated with rope or chains. In the entire history of its existence, the building of the Palace was reconstructed many times, eventually lost part of his greatness and nobility. In addition, the area of the Palace has decreased in size to 1500 square meters.
In the Palace of the Casa del cordón there were some important historical events. It was here on April 23, 1497, there was a meeting of Christopher Columbus with the rulers of the country after his return from his second journey to America. In the same year there was the wedding of Prince Juan, son of Ferdinand and Isabella, daughter of the Emperor Maximilian I. During long trips in the Palace at various times stayed the kings of Spain Juan Carlos I and Philip II. Since 1748, the Palace of the Casa del cordón ceased to be a Royal residence.
Currently the Palace is the Casa del cordón - the House of the Rope is used as a cultural center. In its halls are exhibitions of famous and lesser-known artists in the concert hall, affecting unique acoustics, the performances from the choral and chamber ensembles, pianists.
