The most famous of six Coptic Cairo churches al-Muallaqa was built in the IV century on one of the bastions of the Roman Fort. The very name of the temple "El muallaqa" in Arabic means "suspended". Its meaning is explained by the peculiarities of the location of the Church, the main nave which is located between the two towers of the fortress of Babylon which is the Foundation of the entire architectural complex.
The Church has a typical architecture of that time the shape of a Basilica. However unlike a standard form that had to be three main halls (more Central of the two side, and his Majesty is further emphasized by the difference in the ceiling height, the ceilings of the side halls were made below), al-Muallaqa columns divided into four halls. Central facilities differ from each other only by the width.
In the magnificent old Church iconostasis. But, unlike the Orthodox churches, icons are located at the very top of it. The main part of the iconostasis is a carved panel from Lebanese cedar wood, richly inlaid with ivory. The Church walls are also decorated with icons, distinctive features of which is the image plane, the non-observance of proportions, aproriate details. Nevertheless, they make a very strong impression.
There are virtually no frescoes, is also an element of culture of the Copts, murals were used only in the chapel and in the Church they can only be seen in the form of ornaments on the columns.
As in most Coptic churches, inside the bleachers. Differed in Coptic culture and crosses - they are oriented in two directions, so that, from whatever side you look - see the Cross.
In the glass cases, covered with scraps of paper, in wooden boxes wrapped in trunks, are the relics of saints that are accessed with their requests and prayers of the many pilgrims who visit the Coptic Church.
Al-Muallaqa the only Church which can be accessed from the outside of the Fort, the rest of the churches are located inside the Fort.
The temple has become the most significant of all six churches after the public apparitions of the blessed virgin Mary above the Church in the 60 years of the twentieth century. Immaculate prayed to the Lord, exuding light in the night, and blessed the afflicted to be healed, after which they recovered.
