The architecture of the synagogue Ben Ezra not differ from the standard architecture of the Coptic churches. This happened because the building originally was the Church, but at the end of X century the Caliph Hakim closed the Church. In more recent times the building purchased by the Jewish community, which at that time was a major part of Egyptian society. The synagogue was named after Rabbi of Jerusalem, Abraham Ben Ezra.
