Tower on Black Mountain, previously known as Telstra Tower is a telecommunication tower located on the top of Black Mountain in the Australian capital Canberra. One of the most notable attractions of the city with a height of 195, 2 meters offers visitors wonderful panoramic views of Canberra and its surrounding area from one of three viewpoints or from the rotating restaurant.
In April 1970 the Minister of communications of Australia asked the construction Department to conduct survey work for the construction of the Black Mountain tower, which could provide communication services and to serve as a meeting place for residents and visitors alike. The tower was built to replace the radio relay station on the Red hills and the television antenna which existed on the Black Mountain. Already at the design stage of a heated debate – the public feared that the tower due to their position at the top of the mountain will dominate over other aesthetically sensitive locations Canberra. In the high Court of Australia even a lawsuit was filed against the decision of the government on the construction of the tower, however, the court sided with the state, and construction began. 15 may 1980 Telstra Tower officially opened by the former Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Fraser.
Today in the tower in addition to companies that provide communication services to the population, there are 3 observation decks (1 inside and 2 outside), café, gift shop and a revolving restaurant "Alto Tower". Only in Canberra revolving restaurant rotates 360º for 81 minute, allowing visitors during the meal to enjoy a variety of views from the Windows.
