The Church of Saints James and Nicholas is one of the three largest churches in chełmno, located in the Northwest part of the Old town. The construction of the Gothic Church began in the year 1326, after coming to the city Franciscan monks in the late thirteenth century and continued for almost a century.
Gothic building, built of brick, had a special characteristic: thin octagonal bell tower 54, 5 meters. On the North side of the Church of Saints James and Nicholas was adjacent monastery buildings and a Baroque chapel, which was demolished in the nineteenth century after the dissolution of the monastery in 1806. The rich interior was transported to the other churches in Kuyavian and Lisewo. 1822 for six years the Church of Saints James and Nicholas was under the care of sisters of mercy. Fortunately, the decision was made about the need to rebuild the temple. In 1859, the Church building was opened on Church gymnasium, parallel restoration work began. In this period were created: neo-Gothic choirs, confessionals and altar with stained glass works of Wojciech Lozanskogo, which were completed in 1867. In addition, during this period, was repairing the roof of the Church.
Today the Church of Saints James and Nicholas is an important landmark chełmno and one of the symbols of the city.
