The famous Museum of local lore in the city of Cherepovets was opened in 1896. The earliest collections of the Museum were collections devoted to natural history. So popular herbaria Petrova, M. D. Starting in 1907, was the beginning of the formation of the paleontological collections of the Museum. At this time, in the process of building a harbour on the river Agora, was discovered a huge number of fossil bones of ancient animals. This collection mostly enriched in 40-70 years during the construction of a plant for the processing of ferrous and nonferrous metals. A considerable number of bones of mammoths, musk oxen and bison were found in the construction pits and quarries.

During the 20-ies of the 20 century, because of the rapid development of the local history movement in the study of the Vologda region, the process involved a large number of local enthusiasts. The nature Museum has organized numerous expeditions associated with the study of flora and fauna. The beneficial effects of cooperation with the Geological Committee was manifested in geological surveys, and in-depth studies of deposits of construction materials. Throughout time, the nature Museum is constantly replenished with new exhibits, such as herbaria, rocks, minerals, stuffed fish and animals. It is worth noting that the greatest interest is the collection of stuffed animals, which includes stuffed bear and four cubs, a bear-bull, moose, lynx, foxes, wolves and rare birds - eagle, eagle, herons.

In 1936 at the Museum of nature was created by skilled plot nerds-ethnographers. This site was used for promotion and propagation of the ideas of I. V. Michurin, as well as the latest agricultural technology, became a consistent continuation of the exposition and included beautiful and amazing garden continuous bloom, greenhouses, an orchard and a large exhibition hall.

Over time the collection of the Museum was to be extended, at the expense not only of professional agents and forwarding charges, but thanks to the gifts welcoming the residents of the city of Cherepovets. Was the place to be and a separate collection, for example, the collection of shellfish Volkova A. I. or a famous collection of plaster casts of mushrooms Manaev, A. F., which was purchased in order to completely make the exhibition Fund of the Museum.

Auxiliary science Foundation of Museum of nature presents a huge collection of negatives and photographs, the authors of which were Berezovski, M. V., Mikhailov V. N., Skoropadsky N. D. and many other masters of their craft. They participated in many competitions and been published in various journals; their work was used in the design of the albums associated with nature, books about beauty, not only here, but throughout Russia. The total number presented in the Museum exhibits, as well as the items included in the Museum Fund, reaches more than thirty thousand.

At the moment, the nature Museum is located on the second floor of a building located at Prospekt Lunacharskogo. Museum area is 500 square meters, the exhibition area is 360 sq. m. the Museum has a small room used for classes and lessons for children of the lecture. The exposition is organized by the celebration of the centennial of the Museum in the city of Cherepovets and reflects all the natural features and characteristics of the Cherepovets district, tells the story of a local nature.

On the firm basis of collections and exhibitions from reserve funds held enormous work connected with the reception of visitors, mainly students and schoolchildren. Research staff lectures, excursions, discussions on forty to a variety of natural history exhibitions, themes, environmental festivals, seminars and various other events.
