The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Bukovina has a long history spanning more than two centuries. The first steps towards the creation of the society were made in the 80-ies of the 18th century, unfortunately, at the time this case through to the end and failed. First, Ukrainians prayed in the Church, at the altar of the Dormition. But in 1820, Chernivtsi F. Turkul gave a plot of land and donated a small sum of money for the construction of a Greek Catholic Church. In June 1821 the local Greek Catholics solemnly entered into their new temple. In 40-ies of the 19th century the Church was finally built, from Italy was brought iconostasis and two altars, in the painting of icons was attended by renowned Polish painter A. Odahowski (today you can see his autograph on the icon of Jesus Christ). Soon after this the Church was enriched by the icon of Christ, for which the contributor and the founder of the Church F. Turkul in 1879 in Krakow manufactured gilt Riza.

To Chernivtsi temple not once visited the Greek Catholic bishops. In particular, in 1880, it was visited by Metropolitan Joseph (Semibratovo), and in 1900 - Andrey (Sheptytsky), Bishop of Stanislavsky. It should be noted that in 1930, Bukovina consisted of 18 thousand Ukrainian Greek Catholics.

After standing for over a century, the Church was substantially rebuilt in the Empire style. The author of the project were well-known scientist and politician V. Zalozetskiy. In 1937 the Church was called the assumption of the blessed virgin Mary. In 1946, when the Church was officially abolished, the Cathedral of the Dormition was transferred to the Russian Orthodox Church. And in 1961 it was closed. At closing of the faithful of the UGCC managed to move the iconostasis and the altar of the blessed virgin and Jesus Christ in the Church of St. Nicholas, which was nearby.

In January 1990, before the closed doors of the Church, father Nicholas Simkaylo served the first divine Liturgy. In early 1995, in the assumption Cathedral of the UGCC were returned to the iconostasis and the miraculous icon of the Mother of God.
