Wat Ngam Muang is the most important Church in the history of Chiang Rai province and the whole of Northern Thailand. The name of the temple in the Thai language means “beautiful city”.
The most important place on the territory of Wat Ngam Muang takes Chedi (stupa), which contains the ashes of king Mangra. He was the founder of Chiang Rai and the Lanna Kingdom, situated on the territory of today's Northern provinces of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun and others.
As the story goes, the ashes of king Mangra, who died in 1317 in Chiang Mai, was soon laid inside the Chedi his son.
Later around the temple was built in 1670. During the tense relations with neighboring Burma most valuable in the province Chedi was looted and to honor the memory of the king, in 1964, facing the ruins of an ancient Chedi was delivered to king mangrai. It became a place of worship of many inhabitants of Northern Thailand.
