Emporios is a small coastal town on the South coast of the island of Chios. It is located in a cozy picturesque Bay about 30 km from the town of Chios and 5-6 km from one of the most interesting "mastic villages" Pyrgi, the harbour of which he actually is.
The region was inhabited in the Neolithic period (6000 BC) and is of great interest for archaeologists. Unique findings identified during excavations have established that around 3000 BC the settlement that existed here was destroyed by fire, but quickly recovered and later became a major trade centre of the Aegean sea. At the end of the 2nd Millennium, this settlement was again destroyed by fire and abandoned.
Archaeological excavations on the same hill of prophet Elias revealed a fortified ancient Acropolis, built around the 9th century BC To our days partially preserved walls of the Acropolis, the Megaron, probably the former residence of the local Governor, and the ruins of the temple of Athena. Outside of the Acropolis was discovered more than 50 houses, although it's possible there were many more. Unique artifacts found in Emporios, today kept in the Archaeological Museum of Chios.
Today Emporios is a very popular resort with a well-developed tourist infrastructure. Here you will find a good selection of hotels and great apartments, shops, markets and lots of good restaurants and taverns where you can relax and enjoy delicious local cuisine.
Near Emporioum is one of the best beaches of Chios – Mavro Will, covered with black pebbles, formed by a volcanic eruption of Parana. Lovers of sandy and well-maintained beaches is to go to the beach of Komi, located 2 km from Emporios.
