St. Peter's Church Photo: St. Peter's Church

The Church of St. Peter's parish Church in the village Ardingly, County Sussex, UK. The existing building dates from the XIV century, but the Church existed on this site much earlier.

Settlement Ardingly appeared in Saxon times, in the eleventh century the Normans built on a hill Church. Probably, (documented but not yet confirmed) that on this place there was a Saxon Church or deaconescu built. In the VII century, after the conversion of the Saxons to Christianity, were built many such wooden thatched churches. About the Norman Church of the XI century, little is known. To the XIV century in Ardingly was flourishing wool trade, and the inhabitants were able to afford to build a new Church. It was built between 1330 and 1350, in the then prevailing style is decorated Gothic, from the original Norman Church was almost lost. A massive stone tower was added to the Church in the early fifteenth century. What is unusual is that in the tower there is no spire, but this may be due to the fact that the tower served a defensive function, or served as a signal tower. The tower has a height of 15 meters square at the base, 3, 7 m x 3, 7 m, and the thickness of the walls reaches 1, 2 m. Upstairs leads oak staircase, preserved since the construction of the tower. In the XVIII century on the tower there are two bells.

The restoration of the ancient churches was characteristic of the Victorian era, and some changes were made to the Church of St. Peter. The old altar was moved to the tower, replaced the pews, the pulpit and gallery updated. In 1853, in the Church appeared first body. In the late nineteenth century during the restoration works and excavations discovered the chapiter of a column, Dating from XII century is all that remains of the Norman Church buildings, although perhaps some stone blocks in the South wall of the same origin. Some Windows are fragments of medieval stained glass.

Near the Church is an old cemetery where you can find ancient and unusual tombstones.
