The Church of St. Panteleimon is one of the religious and architectural attractions of the capital of Moldova – Chisinau. It is located in the heart of the city among old trees with lush foliage and attracts huge number of tourists.
The Church building, built in 1891 in neo-Byzantine style, is a wonderful monument of architecture of XIX century the Author of this project was the renowned architect A. Bernardazzi. After a year of construction the Church was among the architectural structures that have been marked as public value. Money for the construction of the monastery was donated by the honorary citizens of Chisinau brothers John and Victor zinadine.
The main feature of the building is its shape in the form of a cross with equal-armed branches, and a pair of criss-crossing arches spanning the space of the Central part of the Church building. The unusual beauty of the Church gives octagonal light drum, dome. The basis for the drum to serve those same intersecting arches. The second dome adorns the steeple of the Church.
Special attention is drawn to the facade of the building its unusual veneer – masonry was laid in horizontal strips, where two light stripes stones alternate with dark stripe. In addition, the building of the Church of Saint Panteleimon is decorated with decorative columns, colored vestibule and stained glass Windows. A stone bearing an elegant metal fence topped with bas-reliefs, executed in the form of lion heads.
In the 60s of the twentieth century the building housed a wine tasting room. In 1991 the monastery was returned to the bosom of the Church. In 1992, the Church started operating again. In 2000, the Church underwent major restoration of the building. Restoration work lasted for four years. Today in the Church of St. Panteleimon you can see a wall painting and a new iconostasis. Despite the fact that the temple is in the centre of the capital city noise here is almost inaudible.
