The majestic Cathedral of St. Theodora of Sihla, located in the Central part of Chisinau city is the Cathedral belonging to the Bessarabian Metropolitanate of the Romanian Orthodox Church.

The building of the present Cathedral in the pseudo-Byzantine architectural style, was erected in 1895 as a chapel when the first female Zemstvo school. The author of this work was made by the eminent architect Alexander Bernardazzi. Two entrances near the main facade is decorated with two easy-view front terrace with limestone and shell colonnade.

The single-nave building with three-part division. The dominant position occupied protruding beyond the walls of the octagonal nave, which is crowned by a high hipped roof and cupola. The first floor of the temple has the appearance of ancient porch, on the second floor, it is made in the form of the chamber.

The temple has a rich decor. Its walls are built of two-colored limestone blocks. Particular attention is drawn to his beautiful archways, powerful columns, iron railings and eaves. Onion shape domes around the perimeter of the drum, crowning the facades of the towers and the floor of the Central cupola in the shape of the bulb – all this underlines the monumental value of the building.

The temple, the construction of which money donated to the Princess Vyazemskaya, until 1944, was subordinate to the Romanian Patriarchate and bore the name of St. Theodore. During the period of militant atheism, the Church was used as a gymnasium, and after it was converted into a Museum of atheism. In 1974, during the restoration of the temple of the frescoes were destroyed and laid the concrete for the Church altar.

The solemn consecration of the Cathedral took place only in the 1992 Revival of the Church occurred in 1993 In 1995, shortly before the 100-letnego anniversary of the founding of the temple, he was re-painted by the specialist in fresco painting George Anakiev. Carved iconostasis of the Cathedral performed a famous artist Vasily from Humulesti, and local painter Yuri Lungu gave the Church made in the same style of icons for the iconostasis.
