The main temple of the Tikhvin women's monastery in the city of Tsivilsk is the Cathedral of the Theotokos of Tikhvin, built in 1885 by architect Paul Anikin.
Stone building of the Cathedral was built on the site of a wooden resurrection Church, built in honour of the liberation of the fortress city Tsivilsk from the siege of the troops of the rebel Stepan Razin in 1675. The historical event had a positive outcome (according to Church records) thanks to the Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God, who later became the champion city. The history of the city helped to keep the abode and in the second half of the nineteenth century, when'skaja ascension monastery fell into disrepair and it was decided to abolish. The townspeople, precious monastery and the icon of the defender, addressed the Eminence with the petition, after which the monastery was left open and convert in the women. In those days, the nunnery had the best landscaping. Update of the monastery began thanks to the dedication of the new mother superior nun Cherubim and philanthropist Basil Nikitich Nikitin, by means of which was rebuilt the whole monastery complex. The most striking event nunnery was building a large stone Church in honor of the Tikhvin icon of the Mother of God, where the main altar was decorated with a particularly venerated in the city the way. The five-domed Cathedral in the eclectic style is ideal looked near five-tiered bell tower (1775 buildings), remaining from the Voznesensky temple (the site of which was built the Cathedral).
After the closure of the monastery in 1925, the old bell tower was destroyed, and the monastery's main Church were broken slabs. After reconstruction the building of the Cathedral turned into a conventional three-storey building of Soviet planning. In the late nineties, the remaining buildings of the monastery were returned Chuvash diocese and more than ten years was the reconstruction of the architectural ensemble of the monastery.
