Archaeological Museum of Cremona opened in 2009-m to year in the building of the Church of San Lorenzo and adjacent chapel Broke the 15th century. This independent Museum grew out of the archaeological collection of the city Museum, part of which is still exhibited in the Palazzo Affaitati.

The Church of San Lorenzo, secularized in the late 18th century, belonged to the Benedictine order, later to olivetorum. It has a three-nave structure and dates back to the early 13th century. In its architecture are the specific elements of the Romanesque style – the vast spaces and the typical decoration of the arches of the apse. During the archaeological excavations carried out in 1962, the year, were found the ruins of the older Church, probably the one referred to in the parchment end of the 10th century and the early Christian cemetery and a Roman necropolis of the 1st century BC

The decision to turn the Church of San Lorenzo in the Museum complex has entailed a large-scale restoration work, which affected both the structure of the building itself and its interior. Today it contains the "core" of the archaeological collection of Cremona – the artifacts discovered from the 19th century up to our days (in Piazza Marconi, which you can get an idea about the city, founded by the Romans in 218-m BC, one of the first to the North of the po river. In total, the Museum houses about 500 exhibits are presented in three sections, fragments of public buildings (particularly theatre on via Cesare Battisti), the remains of houses Domus del Labyrin and Domus del Ninfeo, richly decorated with mosaic floors, antique wall paintings, artifacts from the necropolis (tombstone with the image of members of the family Arrondie, funeral urns and ceramics, bronze and glass).
