Due to the rich history and culture, India has created a huge number of museums. One of the biggest is the national Museum, located in the state capital – new Delhi.

The idea of creating this Museum appeared during the exhibition "Art of India", held at London's Royal Academy, in 1947-1948,. After its completion it was decided to show this exhibition in India, in the building Rashtrapati Bhavan – the residence of the President of India. The exhibition was a huge success, and that was the impetus for the creation of a full-fledged institution that would act on a permanent basis. In 1949, the national Museum officially began its work. But in 1960 a new building was constructed, which now is a Museum collection. On its two floors located more than 200 thousand works of art spanning 5 thousand years of Indian history. Among the exhibits are clay, wood and metal sculptures, toys, jewelry, archaeological finds, weapons and uniforms, paintings, manuscripts, books. The most famous part of the collection are relics, knitted with the Buddha, which occupy a separate section. In addition to historical treasures, the Museum also includes items relating to contemporary art.

On the initiative of the Ministry of Culture, under the tutelage of which is the national Museum, new Delhi, in 1989 when it was created the Institute of Art History and Museology, which are lectures on the history of art, conservation and restoration of art objects and Museum exhibits.
