Historical Museum in the town of Dobrich was founded in 1953. It was created with the purpose of studying, preserving and exhibiting historical and cultural heritage of the Dobrudja region in the North of the Balkan Peninsula, once uniting the territory of Bulgaria and Romania.
The emergence of the Museum is connected with the names of L. Bobeva, D. Dragneva and the M. Dakovo. In 1960 in the former casino was opened the first Museum exhibition. In subsequent years the collection has expanded considerably. Thanks to research activities, organized at the Museum, on the Western shore Durankulak lake was observed and studied the world's largest prehistoric necropolis; conducted excavations on the site of the ancient and medieval fortresses, settlements and burials in the town of Balchik, the villages Adirty, Kamen Bryag, Cape Kaliakra, Chirakman, etc. Found in the works of Antiques can be seen today in the Historical Museum of Burgas.
Currently in the funds complex houses more than 180 thousand exhibits, including one of the richest in the country and in the Balkans collection of prehistoric finds from the archaeological site near the village of Durankulak (5, 3-4 thousand years BC); collection of pottery from old Bulgarian largest center for ceramic production in the village of Topola; jewels from the necropolis in the village of Adirty; exhibition of medieval necklaces; collection of icons of the Renaissance period in Dobrogea, among them – the biggest in Bulgaria the number of samples of icons of Saints Cyril and Methodius, etc.
Presented in the Historical Museum of various artifacts, Dating back from the 6th Millennium B. C. to the present day, will be of interest to any audience: young visitors and adults; representatives of different professions; local residents and visitors from other countries; those who are fond of history and those who simply want to get acquainted with the ancient culture of Dobruja.
