Liskova is a small historic town (now village) is located in the South of Lithuania, in a picturesque, Varėna district, on the left Bank of the Neman river, 9 kilometres from the centre of Druskininkai. Belongs Mercenasco the eldership. In 2005 the population of the village Liskova was at 37.
In ancient written sources Liskova first mentioned in the year 1044. Already in the XI century on a high hill was erected a wooden fortress. At the end of the fourteenth century during the reign of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Vytautas the Great began construction of a stone fortress, abandoned after the battle of Grunwald (1410). To our time the remains of the tower. The first temple in Lisnave with the second half of the sixteenth century to 1624 was reformed. At the end of the XVII century in the village was approved by the authority of the Dominicans.
In the interval between world war I and the great Patriotic wars, Liskova was on Lithuanian territory. On the Nemunas river passed demarcation (boundary) line, almost the boundary that separated the Republic of Lithuania and Vilnius region, annexed to Poland. Mstislav Dobuzhinsky dedicated Lisnave poem of eight quatrains.
Today Liskova famous 4 archaeological sites: the place of sacrifice – mound, on which in the IX-XI centuries a fortress was built of wood, the Temple hill a stone with the imprint of a bull and the so-called "witch's stone".
Also Liskova famous for its historic monuments. This is the castle and the ruins of the tower of the XIV-XV centuries. Next major attraction is the architectural ensemble of the world-famous Church of the Holy Trinity (late XVII century) and the Dominican monastery (second half of XVIII century), located on the high Bank of the Neman river. The Church is a beautiful Baroque pearl in southern Lithuania, which is visited by tourists from Lithuania and around the world. Backyard fence and the porch of the Church belong to the house of the XVIII century, while the bell tower and a commemorative column with a statue of St. Agatha relate to the XIX century. In the Church of the Holy Trinity to this day preserved many works of art of the XVII-XX centuries.
Thanks to the efforts of employees of the cultural center "Liškiava", all this cultural heritage is adapted for tourists and holding cultural events. They are working on the restoration of this cultural monument, which was damaged during the First world war. In those terrible years in the monastery housed a store, post office and other agencies. And in Soviet times, the monastery building was used for another purpose. Here first studied children, then was organized sewing production. And only in 1998 in the village of Liskova it was decided to create a state cultural center "Liškiava".
