The Monastery Of Tisanes Photo: The Monastery Of Tisanes

The monastery of Tisanes, or the monastery of Saint Martin of Tisanes, is in the area of the World de Tisanes. It was founded in the VI century, but the original building is almost nothing left. In the eleventh century the monastery was rebuilt, and in 1567 was home to monks of the Benedictine order.

The decoration of the facade of the Church of the monastery is made in the Rococo style and very colorful. At the beginning of the XII century the monastery received the feudal privileges from Henry of Burgundy, count of Portugal. During the middle ages, after the Kingdom of Portugal defended its independence, the rich and vast estates that were located in the Northern part of the country, passed into the possession of the monastery. The ancient monastery gradually fell into decay, and in the seventeenth century were held multifaceted reconstruction work, which completely changed the original appearance of the monastery. In the monastery we can see today.

Restoration work was first performed in cloisters (the refectory and the tomb) and the Church under the guidance of architects-Mannerist Manuel Alvarez and joão Turriano. By the early eighteenth century was completed the construction of the gate of the monastery, the monks dormitory, guest house, buildings for meetings and library. The main altar and the wooden part of the triumphal arch of the main chapel, as well as the Department, and the side altars were made in the Portuguese style of Rococo. In the Church are sculptures of famous masters Cipriano Cruz do.

In 1864 the monastery and its surrounding land were sold at auction and gradually fell into decay. Most of the ensemble, including the refectory was destroyed in a fire in 1894. In 1986, the monastery became the property of the state and began the restoration of this historical monument.
