Cathedral of St. Nicholas is located in Alicante in the square bearing the name of the Abbot of Penalty. The Cathedral was built on the site of the destroyed mosque in the period between 1616 and 1662 G. It's pretty strict and restrained externally, the building, built in the late Renaissance to early Baroque. The Cathedral was built and named in honor of St. Nicholas is considered the patron Saint of Alicante.
In plan the building of the Cathedral has the shape of a Latin cross with alternating buttresses and chapels. The facade is designed by and under the supervision of architect Juan de Herrera. Inside the Church is the beautiful chapel of the Holy Communion, recognized as one of the most striking examples of Spanish Baroque. In the same style and the chapel of St. Nicholas, with his saints, located in the center of the apse is the work of Juan de Villanueva.
The internal space of the Church that affects the size and spaciousness, is crowned with an incredible dome height of 45 meters. Finishing the interior is replete with marble and tiles of various colors.
Special attention deserves the magnificent gilded altar Nicholas BorrĂ s in 1574 and fenced with wrought iron railings a beautiful filigree work.
In the Cathedral are kept sacred relics - the relics of saints Felicity, Roja and Francis Xavier.
The Cathedral is the organ from the 16th century, which is one of the oldest in Spain and is currently under reconstruction.
