On the spot where now is situated the Franciscan Church of St. Michael in the Austrian Eisenstadt, formerly a Minorite monastery with the Church of St. John the Evangelist. However, in 1529 during the first siege of Vienna by the Turks, the monastery was destroyed and almost 100 years of the Holy place was empty. Exactly as long until the count Nikolaus esterházy in 1625't founded a Franciscan monastery.
The construction of the monastery lasted from 1625 to 1629 years, and the consecration of the Church took place in 1630. In Church vaults were equipped with five rooms, which is located in the princely tomb. But already during the second siege of Vienna by the Turks and the Church, and the monastery was burned to the ground. This time period until the restoration lasted about 70 years. It happened in 1772. And in the years 1777-1778 was followed by the construction of the Western Church tower. From 1856 to 187 years, the princely crypt Esterhazy was rebuilt and expanded.
This reconstruction work is not over. In 1898 followed the General repair of the Church, from 1958 to 1959 were also renovated the interior, and in 1971 was a completely new façade.
The decoration of the Franciscan Church of St. Michael striking in its splendor. White walls and high arches, three gold decorated the altar – here asceticism and luxury does not contradict, and in some sense even complement each other.
For many years the family Esterhazy meditated on the possibility of opening a family vault for public access. Currently found an intermediate solution: a special system of mirrors allows visitors a glimpse into the Prince's tomb without disturbing the rest of the deceased aristocrats.
