The Church and monastery of the virgin of mercy graça is one of the most important monuments of religious architecture in the Renaissance style in évora.
Beautiful building of the monastery stands on Largo da graça. The monastery, which was inhabited by the monks of the Augustinian order, was founded in 1511. The Church of the monastery began to be built in 1540 by order of king joão III. The construction of the temple has been the architect of the Royal house Miguel de Arruda. Also in the construction of this building was attended by renowned French sculptor Nicolau de Santaren.
The facade of the temple attracts attention with its unusual architectural design. At the corners of the pediment are sculptural globes. And under them there are four granite figures with torches. Among the locals, these figures are called "the Sons of graça". In 1834, when religious orders were expelled from the country, the building of the monastery was given the property of the state and turned into barracks. This transformation has caused great damage to the monastery: the building fell into disrepair, many religious and artistic treasures were lost forever, that is a great loss for the art collection of the city. In 1884 collapsed the dome of the Church, which was decorated with tiles depicting scenes from the life of St. Augustine. Unfortunately, none of the images are intact. Altars, Church images and the bells of the Church were moved to the Church of the monastery of St. Francis.
In the second half of the twentieth century the monastery began to recover, trying to preserve features of the original building. Since 1910 the monastery of Nossa Senhora da graça included in the list of monuments of national importance.
