The Bastion Of Canbulat Photo: The Bastion Of Canbulat

Famous Bastion of Canbulat is part of the fortified wall that was built by the Venetians in the early fifteenth century and completely surrounds the old part of the city of Famagusta.

During the period when this territory was under the control of the Venetians, the Bastion was simply called the Arsenal, but later the fortress was named after a Turkish Bey and the warrior-hero named Canbulat (also known as Canbulat), which played a significant role in the conquest of the Ottomans in Cyprus. He especially distinguished himself during the capture of the city of Nicosia. Also, according to legend, in the battle of 1571, during the siege of Famagusta Canbulat sacrificed his life so that the Ottoman army had the opportunity to capture this easternmost Bastion of the city wall. After the capture of the fortress by the Turks buried the remains of his hero on her site. And that is the tomb of Canbulat is considered to be the main attraction of this historic place. It is located in one of the many corridors structures. According to a legend, the fruit of the Fig tree, which grew near the grave of this man, help women who can't have children, to have a baby. So this place is very popular among the ladies. Anyway the castle is one of the most visited attractions.

In 1968, the Bastion of Canbulat was turned into a Museum where you can learn more about the history of Cyprus during the reign of the Ottomans - there are vintage suits and military uniforms, weapons, pottery and more.
