Polish Baltic Philharmonic Chopin – concert hall in Gdansk, located on the island of Allowance in the former city power plant.
The power station building was built in 1898 in neo-Gothic style. The plant operated until 1996 until it was converted into a Philharmonic hall.
Itself Philharmonic orchestra was founded in 1945, and the first concert was held on September 29, 1945 in Sopot. By 1949, the orchestra has grown to 81 people and was classified as one of the best orchestras in Poland. In recognition of the high level of the orchestra he has been called the State of the Baltic Philharmonic.
In 1953 the Philharmonic merged with the Opera at the State Opera and the Baltic Philharmonic. The new organization was headed by Kazimierz. Final separation from the Opera occurred in 1993, after which the Philharmonic was headed by Roman Perutsky. Professor Roman Perutsky is a well-known organ virtuoso and winner of numerous international awards. He performs all over the world and is considered the founder of the International festival of organ music.
The independent institution - the Polish Baltic Philharmonic Chopin needed a new place. And so, after reconstruction in the former power station, Philharmonic found a permanent home.
Today in the building of the Philharmonic society are located: the main concert hall with 1000 seats, a chamber hall with 200 seats, two multi-purpose hall, foyer (exhibition hall).
