The Osborne house is a historic building built in 1858 in North Geelong for the rich cattleman Robert Muirhead. He named his possession in honor of Osborne House in the village of Isle of Wight in England. Muirhead lived in this house until his death in 1862, after which the house was sold. For several years, the mansion passed from hand to hand, until in 1900 the Victorian government bought it for host country residence of the Governor of the state. However, for this purpose the house has never been used.
In 1905 the House of Osborne 12 thousand Australian dollars bought Trust Company the Harbour of Geelong. In 1910 the house was built onto a dining room and seven bedrooms, which allowed the company to use the mansion as a guest house for several years.
In 1913 the Australian Navy accepted the offer of the Trust Companies place in the building of the naval College. The house was repaired, built near the barracks for unmarried sailors, as well as two classrooms and a large barracks for 28 cadets. In the same year the school was officially opened by the Governor of Victoria Lord Thomas Dermana in the presence of Prime Minister of Australia Andrew Fisher. The school is located 28 cadets, 4 officers, 10 sailors, teachers and staff. Interestingly, in order to be among the first cadets of the naval school, young people had to work hard just to these places claimed 137 people! It was considered that the school will become a permanent naval base because of the proximity of the railway transport and safe anchorage in the Bay, Corio Bay, but in 1915 it was moved to the town of Jervis Bay.
During the First World war in the House of Osborne housed a military hospital, and in the period 1919-24, it was used as the base of the Royal Australian Service Submarines. Already in 1929 Trust Company the Harbour of Geelong regained control of the building, the only inhabitant of which has long been the only caretaker. From 1939 to 1945 the house and its grounds were used by the Ministry of defense as a military training center. Today it houses the Maritime Museum Geelong, and meet a variety of community organizations.
