The Bhadra Reserve Photo: The Bhadra Reserve

The Bhadra reserve is located on the slopes of the Western Ghats, the lush tropical jungles of Karnataka. Initially, when in 1951 the area was declared protected, it was called the Reserve Jagar Valley, by the name of the small village, which was located not far from this place. But in 1974, the reserve was renamed Bhadra, and flowing through its territory, the river, besides its area was increased from 77 sq km to 492 sq. km. in 1998, the reserve was also declared a tiger reserve. For this I had to implement a plan for the transfer of 26 villages, which were located on its territory. Towns moved to a distance of 50 km from the borders of the reserve.

Bhadra is divided into two parts – Western Lakeville-Muthodi and Eastern Bababudangiri, and is surrounded by picturesque hills and steep mountains, such as the highest mountains of the state, Mullayanagiri and Tallahatchie. The site includes several large waterfalls.

In Bhadra is home to many animals and birds that thrive in this protected area. There you can watch parrots, peacocks, partridges, elephants, deers, Indian Gaura and, of course, tigers. According to the national programme for the protection of these animals in the reserve, wounded and weak tigers, and currently on its territory, there are about 33 of these huge cats. Among the trees are predominantly deciduous species, only about 120 species, including teak and rosewood.

The best times to visit the reserve is between November and March. On site set up special small hotels for tourists wishing to see the beauty of Bhadra.
