One of the main attractions of the Greek city of Polygyros (the administrative centre of Halkidiki) is an Archaeological Museum located in the heart of the city in Piazza IRO. Unfortunately, at this time, the Museum is being overhauled, and it is closed to the public. The completion and opening of the Museum is planned for the summer of 2014.
The Museum houses archaeological finds collected from all over the Peninsula. There are unique artifacts from the ancient Stagira, Toroni, Polygyros, Ierissos, Stratoni, Pirgadikia, Afitos, and ancient Olynthos. The Museum's collection covers a huge time period, from the bronze age to the Roman period.
In the Museum you can see ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, various funerary artifacts, and more. Among the many exhibits are of particular interest Kouros of the Archaic period, weapons and jewellery of the late Archaic and Classical periods, and a marble head of Dionysos (4th century BC, ancient afytos). Also pay attention to the vessel (the crater) is decorated with the black-figure vase painting of Vrasta (end of the 6th century BC) and two marble grave statues from Stratoni (1st century BC). Essential and artifacts found on the territory of the city and the tombs of ancient Olynthos (dated to the Archaic and Classical periods), perfectly illustrating the life of that time.
In 1998, the Museum opened the exhibition "Three of a colony of Andros on Halkidiki: Sana'a, Akanthos and Stagira", among the many items of special interest are three statues of the goddess Nike (6th century BC). In the same year, the Archaeological Museum of Polygyros won the "Museum of the year" from the management of prehistoric and classical antiquities.
