In the Greek city of Polygyros (capital of the Prefecture of Halkidiki) you should definitely visit the interesting Ethnographic Museum. It is located in the heart of the city in a renovated two-storey mansion. The building previously belonged to the former mayor of Polygyros Mr. Karaganis who donated it for the Foundation of the Ethnographic Museum.
The Museum was founded at the initiative of the Women's voluntary Association for community development (local community involved in the organization of various folk activities over the past 20 years). In may 1998, the Ethnographic Museum opened its doors to visitors. The Museum collection was gathered thanks to the donations of the inhabitants of Polygyros and perfectly illustrates the life of the people of this region in the 19th – early 20th centuries.
On the first floor of the Ethnographic Museum visitors can get acquainted with agricultural implements, which were previously used for ploughing, sowing, harvesting, threshing and harvesting olives. The second floor of the Museum is equipped in such a way as to recreate a typical interior of a town house of the 19th – early 20th centuries. Here you will see the beautifully furnished living room with sofas and low tables and a dining hall, which is characteristic for the Macedonian houses of those times, as well as classic bedroom with iron beds, wardrobes and even linens and kitchen with household utensils and fireplace. A separate room houses a traditional loom. Of special interest in the Museum and traditional costumes of Polygyros and the surrounding area.
