Korsun mother of God Cathedral is one of the most majestic temples of Toropets. There once was a miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Korsun. According to legend, it was written by the Evangelist Luke during the life of the virgin.
In the XII century on the petition of St. Euphrosyne of Polotsk, the icon was brought from Ephesus to Polotsk. In 1239 it was in Toropets, because of Polotsk Princess Paraskeva donated it to the city in honor of the wedding of Alexander Nevsky.
In 1676, by order of Alexei Mikhailovich, in Toropets began to build stone Korsun mother of God Cathedral, which survived until the 18th century, but burned down in one of the large fires. But the miraculous icon and Church utensils were saved. After this the citizens of Toropets decided that the city needs a new Cathedral.
As an architect of Korsun-Bogoroditsky Church made Osip Spirkin from Smolensk. And in 1795, began construction of the Cathedral. It moved quite slowly. This was due to the fact that just at this time the boundaries of the state has moved far to the West, Toropets ceased to be a frontier town and went into decline. Therefore coropchanu had to request the allocation of funds for the construction of the sovereign. Dedicated Paul I was given the iconostasis is handmade, with the right hand in gilded kiot was a miraculous icon. In 1804, the Cathedral was consecrated by Archpriest Nechaev.
In 1840 were gilded Cathedral Chapter. In 1879, the Cathedral on three sides was surrounded by a stone wall with two iron gates and five towers, one of which was a chapel in honor of St. Alexander Nevsky. On the other side of the road opposite the Cathedral stood a brick four-storey bell tower, which was the heaviest bell of the town, weighed 400 pounds.
Donors of the Cathedral, in addition to Paul I were Emperor Alexander I, Dmitry Botkin.
In Soviet times the Cathedral services are not committed. Currently the main temple of the city is recovering thanks to the charitable donations of coropchan.
