Petralona cave is located on the Greek Peninsula of Halkidiki, near the modern village of Petralona (where actually happened and its name) and about 35 km North-East of Thessaloniki. The cave is located on the Western slope of the mountain Katsika at an altitude of 270 m above sea level. Among the huge number of caves in Greece, the cave of Petralona is one of the most famous and impressive. Here were found the remains of the oldest European.
The cave was accidentally discovered in 1959 by a resident of the village of Petralona Philip Hazardia. World-famous after it was acquired in 1960, after another resident of the village found in the cave of ancient human skull, the approximate age of which is estimated amounted to 700 thousand years (though there are disagreements, as some scientists believe that the skull was much less, namely – 200 thousand years). Today the skull is kept in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and is of great historical value.
A thorough study of the cave of Petralona allowed scientists to get very interesting and valuable for science information. In the cave were found fossilized human remains (bones and teeth), ancient tools (stone and bone), fossils of many representatives of the ancient fauna, as well as traces of the ancient hearth.
The total length of the cave (all its corridors and rooms) for about 2000 km away. the air Temperature in the cave during the year unchanged at 17 ° C (± 1 ° C).
Today, the Petralona cave is open to the public. Individual attention, the stunning beauty of the stalactites, stalagmites and stalagnaty the most bizarre forms. Definitely worth a visit and located near the entrance to the cave is an interesting Anthropological Museum.
