Battery Point Photo: Battery Point

Battery point historic heart of Hobart, the area luxury mansions, fancy sailor cottages and shipyards. The name of the district received from the battery of guns, established here in 1818 for the coastal defense of the city. Here you can still feel the spirit of the fishing village of the last century and enjoy the atmosphere of colonial Hobart.

Once Battery point was a residential neighborhood which was inhabited by sailors, and today people live there. Getting here is easy – the famous Stage Kelly lead right from the district of Salamanca.

One of the main attractions of Battery point is the so-called Circle Arthur – a number of old houses around the Villa in the heart of the district. Today there are many tea rooms and restaurants, pubs and cafes, souvenir shops and small private galleries.

In Battery point are also great museums Tasmanian Maritime Museum and the Colonial Museum. At last you can see the objects of everyday life of the locals of the 19th century – dresses, umbrellas, dishes. Of particular interest is the Museum of the People of the Land van Diemen – Georgian building amidst beautiful gardens.

Barracks Angle is the oldest military building in Australia – are also located in battery point. They were built in 1811 and until recently was used for the purpose intended. Today in the barracks housed a Military Museum in Australia. Beside them stands a pretty Anglican Church. George built in 1836.
