Tasmanian Bridge try bridge over the river Derwent, near the business centre of Hobart. The total length of the bridge – 1395 meters. Today it is the main transport artery, connecting downtown on the Western shore with the Eastern shore, where, in particular, are Hobart international airport and a sports stadium "Belgrave". On the bridge in both directions walking trails, but the bike is not provided.
In the 1950s, the rapid development of the Eastern shore of the river Derwent raised the question of the construction of a new bridge because the old one could no longer cope with the increased traffic. Construction began in may 1960 and was completed in December 1964, however, the official opening of the bridge took place only three months later in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Richard, Duke of Glocestershire.
5 January 1975 Tasman bridge was struck by the ore carrier lake Illawarra, which was carrying 10 thousand tons of zinc concentrate. As a result two pylons and three sections of concrete decking collapsed from the bridge and sink the ship. Killed seven crew members and five motorists who at that moment was passing over the bridge. The sunken ore carrier is still lying on the river bottom. In the foreground, the Tasman bridge was closed for repairs, and residents of the Eastern shore was reached on the Western bypass bridge, which lies 50 km from Hobart, or by ferry. Today in the safety car the message on the bridge stopped, it was a large vessel passes.
