Cathedral of Saint James Photo: Cathedral of St. James

Cathedral of St. James was built in Baroque style in 1717-1724 years by the architect Johann Jakob Herkomer in place of the former Gothic Cathedral. The building was badly damaged during the Second world war, but was restored and rebuilt in the 50-ies of XX century.

Baroque interior of the Cathedral was created by famous masters - brothers Basics. On the vault depicts scenes from the life of St James. The main attraction of the Church is the painting "the virgin Mary – Helper" works by Lucas Cranach the Elder.

In the North aisle is the tomb of Archduke Maximilian III. His magnificent tomb is a masterpiece of bronze casting of the late German Renaissance.

In 1993 the Cathedral was re-opened to visitors after a two-year restoration.
