The construction of this magnificent monument was started in 1961 on the orders of President Sukarno of Indonesia. Sukarno was President of Indonesia from 1945 to 1967. It is worth noting that President Sukarno was awarded the honorary title of "national hero of Indonesia", the title of which is given by the government of Indonesia for his contribution to the struggle for independence and the development of the Indonesian state. Public opening of the monument took place in 1975. The top of the monument is made in the form of flame and made of gold leaf.
The construction of the monument occurred in three stages. The first phase lasted from 1961 to 1965. In August 1961, President Sukarno was laid in an official ceremony the first pile of the monument. Just for the foundations of the monument were scored 284 reinforced concrete piles, and for the construction of the Foundation of the Museum was used 360 piles. Work on the Foundation was completed in March 1962, and in October, were built the walls of the Museum. After we began construction of the obelisk, which ended in August 1963. The next stage of construction (1966-1968) had been slow because of lack of funding, and because of the "30 September movement", an organization which consisted of the Communist-minded officers who tried to make a coup on the night of 30 September to 1 October 1965. The last phase of construction lasted from 1969 to 1976. The Museum has added dioramas, and had to finish the remaining technical work in the Museum.
The official opening of the monument took place in July 1975. It is worth noting the fact that the architecture of the monument embodies the Hindu philosophy of the Linga and Yoni, the indivisible unity of male and female. The monument stands on a square platform, which is located inside the Museum. The Museum offers presented on display about 50 dioramas depicting the history of the people of Indonesia. On top of the tower, at a height of 115 m, there is an observation deck. On the North side of the monument there is a statue of an Indonesian hero Diponegoro.
