The Jerusalem Biblical zoo is officially another name – the zoo, the Tisch family, by the name of American benefactors. However, in common parlance, the citizens continue to call it Biblical zoo, as used with 1940, when a Ukrainian immigrant, Professor of Zoology at the Hebrew University Aaron Solow opened living area in the center of Jerusalem.
Solow sought to provide its students the opportunity to study mammals, reptiles and birds mentioned in the Bible. In addition, he wanted to break the invisible wall between academic intellectuals, and ordinary people. However, the common people were dissatisfied with the neighbourhood as a living area due to odors, noise, and fear that it will escape any dangerous animal. Since then, the zoo grow and moved several times.
Now it occupies 25 acres in a valley southwest of Jerusalem. Duplex space you can drive around on a sightseeing train and you can get around on foot, exploring not only the fauna but also the flora in the Park grow local trees and shrubs, many of which are also mentioned in the Bible. Here there are olive trees, Fig trees, carob trees, pomegranates, date palms, pistachios, oaks, pines. The artificial lake at the main entrance is fed pools and waterfalls that flow into each other.
At the mention of the animals of the Bible the first thing to mind usually comes Noah's ark. As Noah's ark and built an information centre of the zoo. We show films, hold lectures and exhibitions, a gift shop and cafe on "the deck", which has relaxing views of the Jerusalem hills.
Noah's ark is here viewed as a symbol of nature protection. This is a very important topic for the zoo, which carried out intensive work on saving endangered species of animals, and not only those that are mentioned in the Bible. Some species are extinct in the region, were successfully separated in the Biblical zoo, which their descendants now inhabit the parks throughout Israel. Among them is the Syrian brown bear, African antelope, the ADDAX, the Persian fallow deer (when in 1979 Iran's Islamic revolution, the Israelites fleeing the country, exported five containers with the Persian fallow deer, and now in Israel, the world's largest population of these deer). At the zoo rescued a very different animal from vultures to the blind shrimp.
There are about 300 species of animals (more than 2 thousand individuals) – lions, rhinos, monkeys, zebras, kangaroos, penguins, parrots, snakes, chameleons, flamingos... They live in their natural habitat – from the African Savannah to the rainforest. Valid veterinary center with operating rooms, laboratory and quarantine unit. In "the petting zoo" you can pet and feed the pygmy goats, sheep, rabbits, and in a special pool – koi. Fruits, vegetables and meat needed to power animals, free supply the Israeli company as tithing.
The zoo has almost all biblical animals – almost, because all is still not possible: for example, Leviathan and the unicorn has to be found.
