Archaeological Park Photo: Archaeological Park "Ophelia"

Archaeological Park "Ophelia" must visit to feel the Jerusalem in the days of the earthly mission of Jesus Christ, virtually on the eve of the destruction of the city by the Romans.

The Park lies near Dung (Rubbish) gate in the South wall of the Old city. In ancient times there was a hill Ophelia (the name means "ascent, hill"), repeatedly mentioned in the old Testament. When king Solomon hill has sryle, the terrain began to build up.

Before you enter the Park, it makes sense to look in the adjacent center Davidson – Museum in the cellars of the Umayyad Palace, excavated by archaeologists. Created by the center on donations American businessman, one of the world's largest manufacturers of automotive glass William Davidson. Local exposure by virtual reality is one of the most technologically advanced in Jerusalem. It is possible to "try" a Grand Second temple, rebuilt by Herod the Great, convincing visualization created with scientific precision.

No less fascinating real exhibits of the center. Here are exhibited the oldest written document of Jerusalem – a tiny piece of baked clay with Akkadian cuneiform, presumably the XIV century BC, In the ruins of the Umayyad Palace was found a Roman stone pillar carved with the name of Caesar Vespasian, the conqueror of Jerusalem, and with the mention of the Tenth Roman Legion, stormed the great city in the year 70.

Real archaeological Park near the Davidson centre is a Paradise for anyone interested in the history of the Holy Land. There are abundant remains of buildings from the Second Temple period, including stone arches, which were referred to in the Scripture stalls of temple merchants.

In those days, every Jew was obliged to regularly bring in the temple sacrifices. Monetary donations were made by the special coin ("sacred pieces"). In the days of religious holidays hundreds of thousands of pilgrims flocked to the Shrine, beside which walked a brisk trade in sacrificial animals and pigeons, money exchange. In this day Jesus "cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers and the seats of them that sold doves, and said unto them: it is written, My house a house of prayer, but ye have made it a den of robbers" (Matthew 21:12-13).

Monumental steps lead to the Temple mount, three-arch, laid stone walls, the gate of Huldi – they were called by the name of Jerusalem, the prophetess who predicted the punishment to the people of Israel. Most of the steps are renovated, but still ancient – it is likely that they were Christ. There are also many remains of mikvahs (ritual pools for bathing before entering the Temple). Archaeologists have unearthed a well-preserved residential building Byzantine period (VI-VII centuries with plastered walls and mosaic floors.

Tourists walk along the specially built stairs and ramps, with which it is convenient to view the ruins. Survived high tower, built by the crusaders as an observation, – it is possible to rise, hence clearly visible Kidron valley, mount of olives, the Jewish quarter of Jerusalem.
