Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in the Christian quarter is impossible not to notice her nearly fifty-meter bell tower in the distance catches your eye. This Church, consecrated in 1898, is the latest in the Old town, but the history of the area Muristan where she stands, goes back to earlier times.

A majestic building in the Romanesque style contrasts with the surroundings, right at the entrance to the temple – shops of the Greek market "Atimos". However, tourists pay attention to the sculptures around the entrance of a Church: a lamb, an eagle with folded wings (a symbol of the German Empire), the Maltese cross. The entrance on the North side is also remarkable: it is built the arch of the time of the crusaders. These details remind us of the history and place, and the Church itself.

In the beginning of XI century Italian merchants from Amalfi, there was constructed a hospital and Church of Santa Maria latina. Later, when Jerusalem was conquered by the crusaders, the building was used as a shelter and sanctuary for sick and injured soldiers and pilgrims. On the territory of Muristan arose one of the most famous medieval orders of the Hospitallers, or Maltese. The Hospitallers occupied an entire block, but in 1187 it was in ruins after the fall of Jerusalem under the onslaught of the Sultan Saladin.

In the nineteenth century, Sultan Abdul Aziz donated part of the district of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem and some Prussian crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm. The Church donated the territory was assigned to the Berlin architect Friedrich Adler. An impressive building Adler put on the spot where once stood Santa Maria latina, and with surprising delicacy combined area of the ruins with new walls. At the consecration of the Church of the Savior was attended by Kaiser Wilhelm II was the first in a long time visit European monarch to the Holy Land. Kaiser also was directly involved in the design of the bell tower – he wanted her to resemble the bell tower of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Tivoli.

Then the Church of the Savior looked more magnificent inside than it is now: painted walls, mosaic. The interior has changed after the reconstruction 1970 – now he is simple, even severe. Against the gray walls highlighted with gold stained glass work of Israeli artist Anna Anders-Marcus. The current organ was installed in 1971. Cross for processions created in 1998 by the German sculptor Hubertus von pilgrim. But something has survived from the nineteenth century – so, on the second altar is visible to date: "October 22, 1898".

Under the temple at a depth of 13 metres has been excavated. Some of the findings are open to the public: you can see the mosaic floor, the rest of the Church of Santa Maria latina, part cobbled streets, the remains of ancient quarries and the wall of the late Roman period.

The bell tower is also the need to climb. At the top is a very narrow and steep stairs of the 177 steps. When climbing visible bells – they ring every hour, so it is better to carefully choose the time of visit. But all these inconveniences are forgotten at the top, where the tourist a magnificent panorama of Jerusalem.
